Dumbbell Preacher Curl

The dumbbell preacher curl is an isolation exercise performed with the upper arm supported on a preacher bench while curling a dumbbell. It primarily trains the biceps, with assistance from the forearm muscles, and supports arm-strength and biceps-development goals. The bench limits shoulder movement, helping keep the focus on controlled elbow flexion.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a preacher bench and choose a dumbbell you can control without swinging. Sit or stand close to the bench and place the back of your upper arm firmly against the pad.
  2. Start with the arm nearly straight, the dumbbell held with an underhand grip, and the wrist neutral. Keep your chest steady and shoulder down.
  3. Curl the dumbbell upward by bending only at the elbow. Keep the upper arm in contact with the pad and squeeze the biceps near the top without lifting the elbow.
  4. Lower the dumbbell slowly until the elbow is nearly straight, maintaining control and avoiding a forceful lockout. Complete the desired repetitions, then train the other arm if working one side at a time.

Technique tips

  1. Use a full controlled range that does not cause elbow discomfort; do not force the bottom position.
  2. Keep the wrist neutral instead of bending it back or curling it to move the weight.
  3. Choose a lighter load if your shoulder lifts, upper arm leaves the pad, or the dumbbell drops quickly on the way down.
