Dumbbell Seated Alternating Arnold Press

The dumbbell seated alternating Arnold press is a shoulder press performed one arm at a time, starting with the palms facing the body and rotating them outward during the press. It primarily trains the deltoids while the triceps assist, supporting shoulder strength, control, and balanced unilateral pressing ability.

Instructions

  1. Set up an upright bench with back support. Sit tall with both feet flat on the floor, holding dumbbells at shoulder height with elbows slightly in front of the torso and palms facing you.
  2. Brace your abdomen and keep your head, upper back, and hips supported. Keep the non-working dumbbell still at its starting position.
  3. Press one dumbbell upward in a smooth arc while rotating the palm outward, finishing with the arm nearly straight overhead and the palm facing forward.
  4. Lower with control as you rotate the palm back toward your body until the dumbbell returns to shoulder height.
  5. Alternate sides and repeat, keeping the torso upright and avoiding any shrugging or leaning to help the weight move.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load. The stationary arm increases the demand on shoulder stability, so do not let it pull your torso out of position.
  2. Use a smooth rotation. Rotate through a comfortable range; do not force the shoulders into a painful position.
  3. Breathe steadily. Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower, keeping the ribs from flaring excessively.
