Dumbbell Seated Alternating Shoulder Press

The dumbbell seated alternating shoulder press is a unilateral overhead pressing exercise performed while seated, pressing one dumbbell at a time. It primarily trains the deltoids while the triceps assist with elbow extension. It supports shoulder strength, pressing control, and balanced side-to-side development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a bench upright and sit with both feet flat on the floor. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder level, with palms facing forward and elbows slightly in front of the torso.
  2. Brace your trunk by keeping your chest tall, ribs controlled, and back supported by the bench. Keep your wrists stacked over your elbows.
  3. Press one dumbbell upward while exhaling, extending the elbow until the arm is nearly straight overhead. Do not forcefully lock the elbow or shrug the shoulder toward the ear.
  4. Lower it under control to shoulder level while inhaling, keeping the forearm close to vertical.
  5. Press the other dumbbell using the same path, then continue alternating sides. Stop the set if you cannot keep the torso stable or control the lowering phase.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. The non-pressing arm should remain steady at shoulder level rather than drifting or dropping.
  2. Avoid excessive back arching. Keep the ribs down and reduce the weight if your lower back lifts away from the bench.
  3. Control both phases. Press smoothly and lower each dumbbell deliberately instead of letting it fall into the bottom position.
  4. Keep the neck relaxed. Leave space between the shoulders and ears throughout the movement.
