Dumbbell Seated Arnold Press

The dumbbell seated Arnold press is a shoulder press performed while seated, starting with the dumbbells in front of the shoulders and rotating them as you press overhead. It primarily trains the deltoids, with the triceps assisting. It supports shoulder strength, muscular development, and controlled overhead pressing ability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit upright on a bench with back support if available. Place both feet firmly on the floor and hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, with palms facing you.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest tall, ribs controlled, and core gently braced. Keep your wrists neutral and elbows slightly in front of your torso.
  3. Press and rotate: Press the dumbbells upward in a smooth arc while rotating your palms outward, finishing with palms facing forward near the top.
  4. Finish overhead: Stop when the dumbbells are overhead with arms nearly straight. Keep your shoulders down away from your ears and do not forcefully lock the elbows.
  5. Lower with control: Lower the dumbbells along the same path while rotating the palms back toward you until the weights return to shoulder height.
  6. Repeat safely: Use a load you can control without leaning back, bouncing, or shrugging. End the set if you feel sharp pain or cannot maintain the movement path.

Technique tips

  1. Use a comfortable range: Start with the dumbbells at shoulder height; do not force the bottom position if shoulder mobility is limited.
  2. Keep the torso still: Avoid arching the lower back to finish a repetition. Reduce the load if you cannot keep your ribs controlled.
  3. Move smoothly: Coordinate the rotation with the press rather than twisting abruptly at the shoulders or wrists.
  4. Control the descent: Lowering slowly helps maintain shoulder position and prevents the dumbbells from dropping into the bottom position.
