Dumbbell Seated Curl

The seated dumbbell curl is an isolation exercise in which you curl dumbbells while seated. It primarily trains the biceps, with the forearms assisting grip and elbow flexion. It supports arm strength and hypertrophy while the seated position helps limit momentum.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit upright on a bench with a dumbbell in each hand, feet flat on the floor, and arms hanging at your sides.
  2. Position: Keep your chest tall, shoulders down, and elbows close to your torso. Start with palms facing forward.
  3. Curl: Exhale and bend your elbows to raise both dumbbells toward your shoulders without moving your upper arms forward.
  4. Pause: Briefly squeeze your biceps near the top while keeping your wrists neutral.
  5. Lower: Inhale and slowly lower the dumbbells until your elbows are fully extended without forcefully locking them.
  6. Repeat: Use a controlled range of motion for all repetitions and stop if you feel sharp pain in the wrists, elbows, or shoulders.

Technique tips

  1. Avoid swinging: Keep your torso still against the seated position; do not use your back to lift the dumbbells.
  2. Control the load: Choose weights that allow steady lowering and full elbow extension without losing wrist position.
  3. Keep elbows fixed: Let the elbows act as the pivot rather than letting them drift forward or flare outward.
  4. Breathe smoothly: Exhale while curling and inhale during the controlled descent.
