Dumbbell Seated One-Arm Arnold Press

The Dumbbell Seated One-Arm Arnold Press is a unilateral overhead pressing exercise performed while seated, rotating the dumbbell from a palm-facing start to an overhead press. It primarily develops the deltoids while also training the triceps and shoulder control. It supports shoulder strength, balanced side-to-side development, and overhead pressing coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit upright on a bench with your feet planted firmly and hold one dumbbell at shoulder height, with the elbow bent and palm facing your body.
  2. Brace: Keep your ribs down, tighten your abdomen, and maintain a neutral spine without leaning to either side.
  3. Press and rotate: Press the dumbbell upward in a smooth arc while rotating the palm outward, finishing with the arm nearly straight above the shoulder.
  4. Control the top: Keep the shoulder down away from the ear and avoid forcefully locking the elbow.
  5. Lower: Slowly reverse the rotation as you lower the dumbbell to shoulder height, keeping the movement controlled.
  6. Repeat safely: Complete all repetitions on one side, then switch sides; use a load that lets you avoid twisting or arching your back.

Technique tips

  1. Use a smooth rotation: Rotate gradually during the press rather than forcing the shoulder into position.
  2. Keep the torso quiet: Do not lean or twist toward the working side to finish a repetition.
  3. Choose a manageable load: Reduce the weight if you cannot lower the dumbbell slowly or keep the shoulder controlled.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower.
