Dumbbell Seated Shoulder Press

The dumbbell seated shoulder press is an overhead pressing exercise performed while seated on a bench. It primarily trains the deltoids, with the triceps assisting as the elbows extend. It supports shoulder strength, upper-body muscle development, and pressing control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a bench with back support close to upright. Sit with both feet flat on the floor and hold a dumbbell at each shoulder with palms facing forward.
  2. Brace your trunk by keeping your chest tall, ribs controlled, and lower back neutral against the backrest.
  3. Press upward by driving the dumbbells overhead in a smooth arc until your arms are nearly straight. Keep your wrists stacked over your elbows.
  4. Control the descent as you lower the dumbbells to shoulder level, keeping the elbows slightly in front of or in line with the torso.
  5. Repeat with control without bouncing or excessively arching your lower back. Stop if the movement causes sharp pain.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. Choose dumbbells that let you keep your torso stable through every repetition.
  2. Avoid flaring the ribs. Excessive lower-back arching usually means the load is too heavy or control has been lost.
  3. Keep the path smooth. Press and lower at a controlled pace rather than locking out forcefully or dropping the weights.
  4. Breathe steadily. Exhale during the press and inhale as you lower the dumbbells.
