Weight Plate One-Arm Shrug

The Weight Plate One-Arm Shrug is a unilateral shoulder-elevation exercise performed while holding a weight plate at one side. It primarily trains the upper trapezius, with the forearm working to maintain a secure grip. It can support upper-back strength, shoulder-girdle control, and balanced side-to-side development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart and hold a weight plate securely in one hand at your side. Let the loaded arm hang straight with the palm facing your thigh.
  2. Set your posture by bracing your abdomen, keeping your chest tall, and looking straight ahead. Keep the neck long and the shoulders level.
  3. Raise the loaded shoulder straight upward toward your ear in a controlled motion. Keep the elbow straight and avoid rolling the shoulder forward or backward.
  4. Pause briefly at the highest comfortable position while keeping your torso upright and still.
  5. Lower slowly until the shoulder returns to a natural hanging position. Complete the desired repetitions, then switch sides.

Technique tips

  1. Move vertically: think of lifting the shoulder straight toward the ear rather than circling it.
  2. Do not lean: keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis and avoid bending away from the loaded side.
  3. Use a manageable plate: choose a load you can grip securely without jerking or using momentum.
  4. Breathe steadily: exhale as the shoulder rises and inhale as it lowers.
