Dumbbell Wall Squat

The dumbbell wall squat is a supported squat performed with the back against a wall while holding a dumbbell close to the chest. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes, with the core helping maintain posture. It can support lower-body strength, squat control, and confidence with the squat pattern.

Instructions

  1. Set up with your back flat against a sturdy wall, feet about hip-width apart and slightly forward of the wall.
  2. Hold one dumbbell vertically with both hands close to your chest, keeping your elbows comfortably down.
  3. Brace your core and slide down the wall by bending your hips and knees; keep your knees tracking in line with your toes.
  4. Lower only as far as you can while keeping your heels down, back supported, and movement controlled.
  5. Exhale as you press through your whole feet to slide back to standing, then repeat without bouncing.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load. The dumbbell should not pull your torso away from the wall or force your elbows to flare.
  2. Keep pressure through the whole foot; do not let your heels lift as you descend or rise.
  3. Use a comfortable depth and stop if you feel sharp pain in a knee, hip, or back.
  4. Move slowly in both directions rather than dropping into the bottom position.
