Dumbbell Walking Lunge

The dumbbell walking lunge is a forward-stepping lower-body exercise performed while holding dumbbells at the sides. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while also challenging the calves, balance, and trunk control. It supports lower-body strength, coordination, and single-leg stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, with feet about hip-width apart and your chest lifted.
  2. Step forward: Take a controlled step forward with one foot and keep the front foot flat.
  3. Lower: Bend both knees to descend until the back knee is close to the floor. Keep the front knee tracking in line with the toes and maintain an upright torso.
  4. Drive through: Press through the heel and midfoot of the front foot to stand, bringing the rear leg forward into the next step.
  5. Continue evenly: Alternate legs as you move forward. Use a clear path, keep the dumbbells still at your sides, and stop if you cannot control your balance or knee position.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Start light enough to keep every step controlled and upright.
  2. Control the knee: Do not let the front knee collapse inward; keep it aligned with the foot.
  3. Choose your stride: Use a step length that allows both knees to bend comfortably without the front heel lifting.
  4. Breathe steadily: Inhale as you lower and exhale as you drive up into the next step.
