Weight Plate Shrug

The weight plate shrug is a standing resistance exercise in which you elevate your shoulders while holding weight plates at your sides. It primarily trains the upper trapezius, with the forearms assisting grip control. It supports upper-back strength and shoulder-girdle stability.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, holding a weight plate in each hand at your sides with a secure, neutral grip.
  2. Brace: Keep your arms straight, chest tall, neck long, and lightly brace your abdomen. Let the plates hang close to your body.
  3. Lift: Exhale and raise both shoulders straight up toward your ears in a controlled motion. Keep your elbows straight and do not roll your shoulders.
  4. Lower: Pause briefly at the top, then inhale and lower your shoulders slowly to a comfortable full stretch. Repeat without swinging the plates or bending your torso.

Technique tips

  1. Move vertically: Think of lifting your shoulders straight up and down; shoulder rolling does not improve the exercise.
  2. Use a manageable load: Select plates you can control without momentum, leaning, or shortening the range of motion.
  3. Keep the neck relaxed: Do not jut your head forward or force your neck down as your shoulders rise.
