Dumbbell See Saw Press

The dumbbell see-saw press is a standing alternating overhead press performed with a dumbbell in each hand. As one arm presses upward, the other lowers under control, emphasizing the deltoids and triceps while requiring core stability. It supports shoulder strength, pressing coordination, and balanced left-to-right development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell at each shoulder with palms facing forward or slightly inward.
  2. Brace your core, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and maintain neutral wrists.
  3. Press one dumbbell overhead until the elbow is straight and the weight is over the shoulder; do not lean back.
  4. Lower that dumbbell under control as you press the opposite dumbbell overhead, creating a smooth alternating pattern.
  5. Continue alternating for the planned repetitions, then return both dumbbells carefully to shoulder level before setting them down.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: the torso should stay still rather than leaning or twisting to lift the dumbbells.
  2. Control both directions: avoid dropping the lowering dumbbell while focusing only on the pressing arm.
  3. Keep elbows and wrists aligned: stack the dumbbell over the forearm rather than letting the wrist bend back.
  4. Stop short of pain: use a comfortable overhead range and reduce the load if control is lost.
