Dumbbell Standing Shoulder Press

The standing dumbbell shoulder press is an overhead pressing exercise performed with a dumbbell in each hand. It primarily trains the deltoids while also working the triceps and upper chest, with the trunk helping maintain a stable standing position. It supports upper-body pressing strength, shoulder muscle development, and overhead control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding one dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height. Keep the palms facing forward or slightly inward and the wrists stacked over the elbows.
  2. Brace: Tighten the abdominal muscles, squeeze the glutes lightly, and keep the ribs from flaring. Maintain a neutral head and spine.
  3. Press: Exhale as you press both dumbbells upward in a controlled path until the arms are nearly straight overhead.
  4. Finish: Keep the dumbbells balanced over the shoulders without forcefully locking the elbows or shrugging excessively.
  5. Lower: Inhale and lower the dumbbells slowly to shoulder height, keeping the elbows under or slightly in front of the wrists. Repeat with control.

Technique tips

  1. Use an appropriate load: Choose dumbbells that allow a steady press without leaning back or using leg drive.
  2. Control the torso: Keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis; excessive lower-back arching usually means the load is too heavy or the range needs adjustment.
  3. Move smoothly: Press and lower at a controlled pace. Stop the set if shoulder pain, dizziness, or loss of control occurs.
